Financial management resource support units

In January 2009, Matrix on Board commenced work on building a support network for money management services in the Northern Territory and Western Australia with FaHCSIA funding extended to June 2011.

Money Management Workers are responsible for assisting Indigenous families and individuals to budget, save and make the best decisions about their earning and spending. Our Financial Management Support Resource Units (FMSRUs) are working with the Money Management Workers to ensure they:

  • understand money management and budgeting, financial services and family payments, and are able to provide training and skills development in areas such as professional accountability, casework management, duty of care, codes of conduct, client contact, privacy and confidentiality, record keeping and reporting requirements
  • establish and maintain viable networks and relationships with other relevant agencies, organisations, money management workers and clients
  • offer support in leadership, governance, financial management and reporting.

We engaged BCA National to provide the accredited training to the workers. The training program includes:

  • Certificate I in Financial Services
  • Certificate III in Financial Services
  • Family Payments Education
  • Money Business Community Education Kit.

We have learned a lot from the pilot and we continue to assist Money Management Workers to empower individuals and communities to take control of their financial resources. For further information contact Lawrie Mortimer lawrie@mob.com.au

In December 2009 the FMRSU team conducted a skill development workshop in Broome for our WA clients (Money Management Workers with various NGOs.)

Here are some highlights.
